Polvo - In Prism (2009)

Polvo are the O.G.s of math-rock, doing densely epic and tightly wound guitar epics back when everyone was trying to find flannel in their size and do songs with only three chords. Then Polvo went away in the 1998 when the group imploded after moving to Tough & Go from the comfy confines of Merge. But in 2008, the group got together to do All Tomorrow's Parties in New York and decided to reunite in wax form, cutting the eight tracks that form In Prism, their third album for Merge (and fifth overall), and first since 1997's Shapes. There are a few things you can count on: loud guitars, the mood claustrophobic, and the overall sound 1995-like.

Just posting a new release from Josh fills my head with so many memories, of my youth, innocence, not a care in the world. Hanging out in abandoned warehouses in neighborhoods I wouldn't be caught dead in now, friends who I've lost touch with, friends who left the world too early...it was a time when a banana was simply....a banana.

Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid - NYC (2008)

Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid's fourth collaboration is as much of a concept album as their improvisational technique allows for. NYC, as its name suggests, was recorded in homage to the Big Apple, which is Reid's hometown. It was recorded in two days at the famous Avatar Studio, which has been a recording home to such New York luminaries as Steve Reich and Miles Davis. Hebden comments that "Everything we did when making the record from choosing the studio to the food we ate to mixing the sounds to the order of tracks was done with New York in mind." As far as the music goes, the New York motif is evident in Reid's drumming style -- he states that "New York City is always in the rhythms."

Translation: Imagine you're the 'D' train rolling through Brooklyn. This album makes me feel like I am the train, the tracks, and all the peeps inside.
