Pyramids With Nadja (2009)

Pyramids with Nadja, a massive collaborative effort led by (you guessed it) Pyramids and Nadja, features a very sophisticated collection of otherwise established musicians from Cocteau Twins, Der Blutharsch and Mineral.

Energized ambient, infused with an intelligent for avant-garde metal and an almost indiscernible adherence to a sort of pop sensability, Pyramids with Nadja successfully meld the unparalleled compositional methodology developed in Pyramids s/t album with Nadjas trademarked dirge-like shoegaze.

Mixed and mastered by James Plotkin (Jodis, Khanate, Khlyst).

The Disco Biscuits - Haymaker Music Festival 10/5/2002

Alot of people always ask me about the Biscuits....what's a good show to check out, how should I go about jumping into their music, etc, etc, etc.

This is Set 2 from the now legendary Haymaker Music Festival, SBD source.
The Very Moon featured in this set is one of my favorites of all time, the Magner/Brownstein jam at around the 15 minute mark are nothing but pure fucking bliss.

I hope you enjoy.

Polvo - In Prism (2009)

Polvo are the O.G.s of math-rock, doing densely epic and tightly wound guitar epics back when everyone was trying to find flannel in their size and do songs with only three chords. Then Polvo went away in the 1998 when the group imploded after moving to Tough & Go from the comfy confines of Merge. But in 2008, the group got together to do All Tomorrow's Parties in New York and decided to reunite in wax form, cutting the eight tracks that form In Prism, their third album for Merge (and fifth overall), and first since 1997's Shapes. There are a few things you can count on: loud guitars, the mood claustrophobic, and the overall sound 1995-like.

A Place To Bury Strangers - Exploding Head (2009)

For some reason I was expecting a way more electronic/industrial sounding album from APTBS for their second release. "In Your Heart" does take you there, without the added theatrics that an industrial piece requires. Plain and simple, this album after 1 listen, kicks some fucking ass, and this is why APTBS are one of my favorite bands.

Download this shit.

PS...bring earplugs.

Pissed Jeans - King of Jeans (2009)

If 2005’s Shallow was Pissed Jeans coping with moving out of their parents’ homes, and 2007’s Hope for Men their initial reaction to the mechanical lifestyle of a wage-earner, King of Jeans is their formal and uneasy acceptance of adulthood, by way of one hell of a rock record. Working with renowned producer Alex Newport (who holds a Fudge Tunnel pedigree and has worked with such luminaries as At the Drive-In, The Locust and Sepultura), Pissed Jeans have pushed further into the raw, minimal core of heavy rock music with King of Jeans. Masters of the mundane, beasts of the banal, high priests of the humdrum: these four, white, male high school graduates hardly look further than their own appendages for artistic inspiration, content to execute their own brand of brash and heavy punk music in the Joe Carducci-approved standard rock formation of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. From simple minds and simple fabrics comes this King of Jeans. And there can be only one.

Engineers - Three Fact Fader (2009)

Engineers are back. Four years after the release of their landmark debut, the band return with their epic second album, Three Fact Fader.

The 13-track album was produced by the band along with Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, M83, Maps) over a period of two years, with the final tracks being completed earlier this year. It comes packaged in stunning artwork by legendary music photographer Tom Sheehan.

Engineers are not like any other band. Onstage Simon Phipps is the singer, Dan Macbean is the guitarist, Mark Peters is the bassist and Sweeney is the drummer, but the real clue is in their name: they approach their music like engineers, carefully constructing wonderful walls of sound.

Following the rapturous reception that greeted their mini-album Folly in 2004 and debut Engineers the following year, it’s taken them a long time to build their epic second album, Three Fact Fader. After initial recording sessions, Engineers became unwitting victims of record company restructuring and the album was left in limbo, unfinished until the band reconvened earlier this year, largely motivated by public support.

Bill Callahan - Somtimes I Wish I Were An Eagle (2009)

On Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle, Bill Callahan finds that old downtrodden energy but redefines it on these nine story telling tracks that are completely enthralling. All but one are over 4 and 5 minutes in length, while the stunning closer "Faith/Void" passes the nine minute mark as Callahan "puts God away" and begins his search for something else. When he finds it, we will definitely be eager to listen again!

Diamond Watch Wrists - Icecapped On Both Ends (2009)

Guillermo Scott Herren (aka Prefuse 73) is one of the most renowned
producers of avant-rock and hip hop around today. Over the past 12
months he's remixed the likes of TV On The Radio, Pelican, BLK JKS and
Cornelius as well as having collaborated in the past with Battles and
School of Seven Bells.

Zach Hill is an incredible, self-taught drummer, hailing from
California. He's played in bands with Chino Moreno (Deftones), Rob Crow
(Pinback), Marnie Stern and will soon be drumming with The Mars Volta,
as well as playing in his main group Hella.

Together they've formed Diamond Watch Wrists, and released the album
'Ice Capped at Both Ends'. The album shows an entirely new form of
Herren creations, organic songs featuring Guillermo's plaintive vocals,
guitar and studio wizardry, Hill's singular drumming as well as
previously unheard nods to 60's European acid-folk, classic American
singersongwriters and krautrock.

Ty Braxton (Battles) also guests on 'Simple Love Notes (5 Years
Later)'.

While would call the Diamond Watch Wrists material, 'simple songs about
Herren everyday things' they, of course, strike the listener as much
more.

Deceptively complex in their arrangements, the songs never fail to
strike a fascinating balancing act between brooding and uplifting,
making for an uncommonly well-rounded album.

Limited edition CD - 300 copies only

Blank Dogs - Under and Under (2009)

*** FIRST EVER 5-STAR RATING ON THIS BLOG ****

THIS IS A MUST HAVE !!!

Blank Dogs are a mysterious Brooklyn-based one-man band. Little is known about the main song-writer and the musicians he performs with live. In photos he always wears a mask or head wrap covering his face.

Over the past four years, Blank Dogs have released numerous vinyl LPs, 7" singles, cassettes and CDs. Their first live performance was held in New York in September, 2008.

Blank Dogs will release, Under And Under, their debut album on In The Red Records on May 26. JB Townsend of the Crystal Stilts and Vivian Girls will be featured on the album.

Crystal Antlers - Tentacles (2009)

Another band in my long line of beloved "crystal" bands. No, I'm not cooking meth in the garage.

The group explodes through the unclaimed space between ’60s garage touchs like the Music Machine & the Misunderstood, red-eyed noiseniks like Guru Guru & Les Rallizes Denudes & the mechanized motor-soul of “Osmium”-era Parliament. Between the screamers come the scenery - the Pharoah Sanders-style sax snippets that confetti the end of “Glacier,” the gentle oceanic drone-poem “Vapor Trail,” the album intro that sounds like Blue Cheer chasing Terry Riley’s “Rainbow In Curved Air”.

Due out in early April, this is an album you shouldn't sleep on.
