Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid's fourth collaboration is as much of a concept album as their improvisational technique allows for. NYC, as its name suggests, was recorded in homage to the Big Apple, which is Reid's hometown. It was recorded in two days at the famous Avatar Studio, which has been a recording home to such New York luminaries as Steve Reich and Miles Davis. Hebden comments that "Everything we did when making the record from choosing the studio to the food we ate to mixing the sounds to the order of tracks was done with New York in mind." As far as the music goes, the New York motif is evident in Reid's drumming style -- he states that "New York City is always in the rhythms."
Translation: Imagine you're the 'D' train rolling through Brooklyn. This album makes me feel like I am the train, the tracks, and all the peeps inside.
